The video score / ‘wideo partytura’ PL / is an ✧ original artistic category ✧ proposed in the doctoral thesis of the Polish intermedia artist Jacek Doroszenko. Video score is a practice that explores the points of intersection between musical notation, performance and the specific characteristics of a given location. The methodology involves filming choreographed movements set in various environments or interiors, whose features act as factors that directly determine the composition.

The Scores of Transformation is an intermedia project exploring the acoustic and visual memory of industrial spaces transformed into cultural institutions.

ABOUT

This research is significant both for artistic practice, providing new tools for exploring the memory of place, and for a broader reflection on ways of preserving intangible cultural heritage and the transformations of spaces and objects in the context of revitalisation processes and changes in their functions. The project is funded by a research grant from UKEN University in Kraków, 2026-2027.

METHODS

1

Video score

Jacek Doroszenko – Landscape Video Score. Fjord

– an original artistic method in which the space determines the structure of the sound composition through the performer’s body movements.

2

Field recording

Jacek Doroszenko – Field recordings, Klaipeda

– a method of recording sounds in an authentic environment, outside a recording studio. In this project, it is used to document the current acoustic conditions of selected spaces and to gather source material for sound compositions.

3

A speculative reconstruction

Jacek Doroszenko – Largo for Three Points

– a method involving the artistic interpretation and compositional reconstruction of a lost acoustic environment, based on archival research, interviews with staff at the institution, and an analysis of the acoustic properties of the space.

4

Archival research

Jacek Doroszenko – graphic notations, Norway

– a review of archival documents, architectural plans, photographs and materials relating to the original function of selected buildings. This serves to reconstruct the historical context and identify the characteristic functional and acoustic features of the spaces prior to their conversion.

5

In-depth interviews

– interviews with staff members of the institution, enabling the collection of oral accounts regarding the functioning of the spaces and their acoustic environment. The material from the interviews forms the basis for a speculative reconstruction of the acoustic landscapes.

6

Space acoustic analysis

Jacek Doroszenko – recording session

– a study of the acoustic parameters of selected locations (reverberation time, resonance frequencies, spatial characteristics) for both research purposes and the design of sound systems.
