The ‘video score’ is an original artistic category ✧ proposed in the doctoral thesis of the Polish intermedia artist Jacek Doroszenko. ✎ The research objective of the project is to develop and consolidate the conceptual and practical framework of the video score as a research and artistic method designed to reveal the layers of memory in places that have undergone functional transformation.

METHODS

1

Video score

– an original artistic method in which the architectural space determines the structure of the sound composition through the performer’s body movements.

2

Field recording

– a method of recording sounds in an authentic environment, outside a recording studio. In this project, it is used to document the current acoustic conditions of selected spaces and to gather source material for sound compositions.

3

A speculative reconstruction

– a method involving the artistic interpretation and compositional reconstruction of a lost acoustic environment, based on archival research, interviews with staff at the institution, and an analysis of the acoustic properties of the space.

4

Archival research

– a review of archival documents, architectural plans, photographs and materials relating to the original function of selected buildings. This serves to reconstruct the historical context and identify the characteristic functional and acoustic features of the spaces prior to their conversion.

5

In-depth interviews

– interviews with staff members of the institution, enabling the collection of oral accounts regarding the functioning of the spaces and their acoustic environment. The material from the interviews forms the basis for a speculative reconstruction of the acoustic landscapes.

6

Space acoustic analysis

– a study of the acoustic parameters of selected locations (reverberation time, resonance frequencies, spatial characteristics) for both research purposes and the design of sound systems.
